What do I do about weeds growing in my lawn? Depending on the type of weed, there are many methods to solve this pesky problem. A lot of products are offered to treat lawn weeds, and to best prescribe your solution, we need to see a sample of the problem weed. |
When should I seed my lawn? You can seed any season but winter. However, fall is the best time because grass is a cold crop and grows hardiest in cooler weather. If you decide to seed in the summer, be prepared to have to water up to five times a day (yes, that much) to ensure proper germination. |
How do I seed my lawn? If you are starting from scratch: 1.) Apply topsoil or other soil amendment depending on the condition of your soil (we can help you determine this) 2.) For a new lawn, one pound of seed covers 250 square feet. Make sure to get the right seed. There are lots of different varieties; some are more shade tolerant than others. We can help you determine the perfect seed for your new lawn. 3.) Applying a starter fertilizer will help your new lawn germinate and thrive. For overseeding (filling in thin areas and patches) 1.) Determining the condition of your soil will tell you if you need to amend the area or not. We can help determine this, or for an exact analysis you can have a soil test done. 2.) For overseeding, one pound of seed covers 500 square feet. For both new lawns and older lawns, you should be very careful not to put down too much seed. The number one mistake when laying seed is putting it down too thick. If there is too much seed in one spot, the grass will out-compete itself for sun, water, and soil nutrients. A dime-size spot of soil should have only three seeds on it. For more instruction, please visit us! |
Can I apply weed killer to a newly seeded lawn? Not usually. Most weed killers cannot decipher between weed-seed and grass-seed. You should wait at least 8 to 12 weeks before applying weed control. However, there is one option available - a special lawn weed control that does not harm new seed. If this sounds like what you want, we can tell you more about it. |
How do I know if my lawn has grubs? If it does, what do I do about them? Gently tug on a clump of grass. If it pulls out easily, then check the soil for grubs. They look like fat, white, curled-up worms. If you see more than five or so in 1 sq. ft of grass, you'll need to treat your lawn. To do so, the application procedure depends on the time of the year. The ideal time to apply grub killer is early summer, though it's possible to use one later in the season. Many products work in 24 hours and can be used whenever grubs are present. |
