Below you will find descriptions of some of the most common diseases and insects that harm local plants.  If you recognize any on your own plants, please come down to Woodland Gardens and we will show you exactly what you need to get your plants healthy.

few leaves in a ziploc bag down to Woodland Gardens and we can identify the problem and solution for you.

Common Plant Diseases
POWDERY-MILDEW

ATTACKS: ornamentals such as, dogwood, lilac, rose
LOOK FOR: powder white substance
SYMPTOMS: failed buds
TREAT: various fungicides, reduce humidity
ROSE BLACK SPOT

LOOK FOR: black spots on upper sides of leaves, fringed margins on spots
SYMPTOMS: yellowing and falling of leaves
TREATMENT: avoid overhead watering for prevention, rose fungicides
RUST

ATTACKS: ornamentals, rose, rhododendrons, hollyhock
LOOK FOR: rust-colored spore masses
SYMPTOMS: if severe infection, plant growth can be stunted



Common Insect Pests
SCALE INSECTS

LOOK FOR: sweet "honeydew" substance on leaves and stems, may attract ants
TREAT: horticultural oils
SPIDER MITE

ATTACKS: vegetables, flowers
LOOK FOR: speckled appearance, webbing on plant
APHIDS

ATTACKS: rose
LOOK FOR: soft oval bugs in groups
SYMPTOMS: rolled leaf edges, puckering leaves, honeydew deposites
SLUGS

ATTACKS: lettuce, flowers, fruits
LOOK FOR: slimy, shiny trails on leaves
TREAT: various slug killers
WOOLY ADELGID

ATTACKS: hemlock
LOOK FOR: dry white wooly substance
SYMPTOMS: sap suckers, toxin release, little new growth
